Evergreen Infrastructure

This week, I had the opportunity to meet with Michael Casey and Stella Hinrichsen from Evergreen Infrastructure to explore the fascinating world of green walls and green roofs. It was incredible to hear about the design and maintenance process of these stunning examples of green infrastructure.

I was introduced to various systems used for green walls, including foam systems and potted systems with irrigation connected to a fish pond, providing natural fertilizer. These solutions highlight the thoughtful integration of sustainability in green infrastructure.

Melbourne’s temperate climate presents unique challenges for outdoor green walls. Winter cold and summer leaf burn are common issues, but I was particularly surprised to learn about the significant impact of wind. High and constant winds can dry out plants quickly, making wind a critical factor in plant health for both green walls and rooftop gardens.

My deepest gratitude goes to Stella and Michael for taking the time to share their passion, knowledge, and projects with me. Their dedication to green infrastructure is truly inspiring, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn from their expertise. This experience has deepened my appreciation for the creativity and care that goes into these vibrant, urban spaces.
